Francia. This rare map shows the then known ' modern world' after
Ortelius. This map was included in later editions of Munster's
Cosmographia by Sebastian Petri. The corners are decorated with florid
vine leaves, the title is above the top border and above and below there
are short texts within strapwork borders. Sea monsters and sailing ships
in the oceans. The Pacific Ocean is named as such. Eastern U.S.A is
named as Florida and Nuova Francia, western as India Vel America Nova.
South America is awkwardly shaped and rather oblong, Australia is indefinite and placed both
south of Chile and south west of Africa together with terra incognita,
despite the fact that New Guinea is clearly identifiable (but placed in
western hemisphere. Japan( beginning with late 16 th. century) is also
