Lithgow's Nineteen years Travels through the most eminent places in the habitable world.....Pub. London: Wright, 1682 First Edition

Rebound in full leather which displays some shelf wear-spine with gilt titles shows well.  Internally good with some ageing present, new marbled endpapers, owner names to retained ffeps, pages cropped tight to top, a few pages with marginal tears but otherwise very sound.                 Contains 5 engraved plates (some folding). Lithgow's adventures include seeing a Franciscan friar burned alive in St. Mark's Square in Venice for seducing fifteen nuns; his travels to Greece, Cyprus Constantinople and Africa; and his frequent narrow escapes from bandits, pirates, Turkish marauders and others.  He was eventually tortured as a spy in Malaga by the Spanish Inquisition. An interesting  and rare addition to your collection. (There were earlier forms of the book under different titles-1614 and 1623 and a Dutch version of the 1650's. However, this seems to be the first edition in this format and with this particular title.) - 12mo (17cm x 11cms approx.) 481pp plus table.
