| Excavations in
Cyprus by MURRAY, (S.A.),; SMITH (A.H.) & WALTERS (H.B.).
London, British Museum,
1900. [vi], 126pp. First edition.14 sepia
photolithographic plates on cream cards, with numerous illustrations & plans
(some full page) included in the text. An exhaustive record with copious
notes on the details of the dig, the ruins and the artifacts discovered. Small folio. Original buckram
backed boards, with paper label to spines, corners rubbed. "The
excavations described in this volume were carried out by means of funds
bequeathed to the Trustees by Miss Emma Turnout Turner in 1892. The
result has been the enrichment of the Museum to an unprecedented degree
in a class of antiquities which for a number of years has been
engrossing the attention of students" (Preface).
During the three years of excavations from 1894 to 1896 the British archaeologists moved from sites at Amathus to Curium and finally Enkomi. It is interesting to note that "in accordance with the law of Cyprus, a third of the objects found were handed over to the Government of the island..." Price: CyP 550.00
