fair condition. Red
hard cover boards with both hinges cracked with inside seams with tape
Pen mark on front free endpaper. Colour frontis plate with tissue guard
(guard with tear). Several hundred illustrations contained within; many
full page plates showing artifacts and treasures of the Island.
Documents early archaeology expedition and items found. Ex library copy
with markings of same. Boards have some soiling and spine cover with
wear at ends and small split along top rear board; hence very
attractively priced. [Alexander Palma di Cesnola (1889-1914) conducted extensive excavation in Cyprus, at Paphos (where he was US vice-consul 1865-1877) and Salamis - all apparently on behalf of the British government . He was the brother of the better known archeologist General Luigi Palma di Cesnola, author of a lively social and antiquarian narrative "Cyprus: Its Ancient Cities, Tombs and Temples" (New York, 1878). In all, the brothers were responsible for finding and identifying nearly 50,000 objects, of which about 14,000, due to Alexander Cesnola, are in the British Museum, known as the "Lawrence - Cesnola Collection] Price: CyP 450.00 |
